External counter-pulsation is a non-invasive assisted circulatory treatment method. The principle is to use the R-wave of human ECG as a trigger signal to sequentially inflate the distal and proximal air-bags during diastole, compressing the limbs and forcing the artery blood in the limbs and buttocks to return to the aorta for raising its pressure and blood volume in order to increase the blood perfusion of vital organs like the heart, brain and kidneys. The air-bag deflates rapidly before systole and the vessels of the compressed limbs get loosened immediately, resulting in a sharp drop of peripheral resistance, which is help- ful for the blood ejected from the ventricle to inject rapidly into the artery of limbs via the aorta. This is repeated as per the cardiac cycle to achieve the treatment.
